| This is first of a
series of workshops taught by well-known jazz artist, musician
and composer Laura Hoffman. Piano and Bass Duo- Aspiring jazz
pianists get a change to try playing their repertoire with
and upright bass player. Pianists learn to play chords in
closed position in the middle range of the piano and work
on the intricacies of ‘comping’ in a jazz style.
They will also work on creating improvisational solos based
on the form and chord progression of tunes they know well.
Students will also work on developing a rapport with the bassist,
and jazz etiquette including when to encourage the bassist
to ‘solo’, how to ‘trade fours’ with
the bassist, and how to accompany the bassist when he is playing
the melody.

line, and how to draw from chord symbols to create left hand
patterns. Rhythmic styles such as Bassa Nova, Swing, and Waltz
will be studied, as well as arranging techniques such as modulation
and rhythmic permutation. Class goals will be completing two
