Our JazzPiano4kidz program is the only one of it’s kind in Chicago and is a unique alternative to Suzuki and Traditional methods of learning piano. The program is suitable for children five years and older and explores of the expressive mediums of Jazz and Blues through elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and improvisation. This program is unique not only in the music style and forms that children learn but also in the methods in which it is taught.

Participants in this program learn by both rote (by Ear) as well as traditional music reading using standard notation. Children learn blues and jazz forms, melodies, harmonies, scales, and standard tunes. The program promotes and encourages individual expression by teaching children to write their own musical compositions. The study of Jazz and Blues is optimally integrated with the study of classical music, encouraging versatility in musical style and performance.

Students will work in a private lesson at a set time once a week and can choose an optional adjunct class where they can learn fundamental musicianship skills with children their own age. This gives them a regular opportunity to perform for their peers. Students also perform in recitals as a soloist and in ensembles.

Other advantages of our jazzpiano4kidz program are the benefits from learning jazz harmonies, which are musically more complex than standards classical harmonies. This will build a more advanced knowledge and foundation of ear training and aural skills allowing your student to easily adopt learning of any musical style. Students’ musical reading skills will also benefit because students will be able to harmonize a melody in multiple ways.
