| The Shaak Piano
Method™, an exciting new approach to introducing children
to music, utilizes a natural bond between the student, parent
and teacher. The method is designed for children between the
ages of five and nine and is based on the teachings and publications
of Bernard and Carolyn Shaak of Denver, Colorado. In March,
2001, the National Convention of Music Teachers in Washington
D.C. honored the Shaaks by awarding the Shaak Piano Method™
with the Music Teacher’s National Association’s
(M.T.N.A) "Group Teaching Award."
As
a parent, you want your child’s first experience at
the piano to be a positive one. With the Shaak Piano Method™,
you will see and hear your child’s response to music
right away because they will be MAKING MUSIC and creating
sounds from their own hands instantly. For the child, this
serves his/her need for instant gratification by using music
as its own reward system.
The Shaak Piano Method™ encourages
the student’s learning through group lessons, private
instruction and practice at home. The group class environment
is a teaching tool that provides advantages impossible to
achieve solely in private lessons or home practice alone.
This includes: learning by peer example, exposure to more
musical styles and composers, getting feedback from peers
on a weekly basis, excitement and motivation from group games
and activities, benefits from having a performance arena every
week and development of friendships with others who also enjoy
making music. Parents will also discover how these groups
help motivate student practice habits.
"This approach to piano
playing emphasizes the importance of ‘making music’
before interpreting musical symbols: playing before reading,
in other words, the "ear" before the "eye".
Music is a language, easier understood in the beginning through
‘listening’ than through ‘looking’
at the printed page." - Bernard Shaak, co-founder of
the Shaak Piano Method.
